Juan Pablo Albán Alencastro

He received his law degree and his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (1999). He also holds a Master's degree in International Law magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, United States of America (2003), and completed his doctoral studies in international human rights law at the same University. Throughout his career, among other positions, he served as Advisor to the Vice Minister of Government of Ecuador (1997-1998); Director of the Criminal Area of the Legal Aid Clinic and of the Human Rights Clinic at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (1999-2001); Senior Specialist of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (2003-2010); Foreign Expert of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace in Colombia (2017-present); Member of the Transitional Judiciary Council of the Republic of Ecuador (2018); and Member of the UN Committee against Enforced Disappearance for the period 2021-2025.

In addition to his professional activities, he devotes much of his time to teaching, having been a Professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador and currently an undergraduate Professor at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and a graduate Professor at Universidad Nacional de San Martín (Argentina). He is also a Member of the Inter-American Institute of Criminal Policy based in Mexico and a consultant in criminal, procedural and international law for various national institutions and international organizations.
